SIMFLEX-COAL

This research facility at a real landfill is developed and operated by FluxLab to evaluate methane detection and quantification technologies under realistic landfill conditions. Located at a closed landfill in Ontario, Canada, it is the world's first large-scale facility purpose-built for this purpose.

Led by FluxLab at St. Francis Xavier University, with support from Stanford University’s Environmental Assessment and Optimization Group, the research program evaluates atmospheric methane measurement technologies and generates high-quality datasets to support improving methane monitoring, reporting, and mitigation globally.

Coal mining is a significant global source of methane emissions, and open-cut mines present a particularly difficult measurement environment: large spatial extent, complex terrain, strong atmospheric effects, and spatially distributed sources combine to make standard measurement approaches unreliable.

Coal

Improving the accuracy of coal mine methane measurement technologies is essential for credible emissions reporting, effective mitigation, and informed regulatory decision-making. SIMFLEX-COAL provides the controlled-release environment needed to evaluate technologies under conditions representative of real mining operations — something no existing facility was designed to do.

Facility Capabilities

Complex topography and atmospheric conditions • Point-source and diffuse emission simulation • Controlled methane releases up to 2 tonnes CHβ‚„/hour • Large-scale experimental layouts • Realistic atmospheric transport scenarios

Information for Participants

SIMFLEX-COAL welcomes collaboration from technology developers, service providers, universities, consulting firms, government agencies, mining companies, environmental organizations, and international research initiatives. In 2027, FluxLab will coordinate 3 controlled-release campaigns at SIMFLEX-COAL. The following materials are available to prospective participants and partners.
